The highlight of the opening round, when Maguire shot a 68 and Catlin 69, was a brilliant eight-under-par 64 by former touring professional turned CrossFit Games athlete Pierre-Henri Soero. Playing on a sponsor’s exemption, the 41-year-old American, who played on the Asian Tour in 2011, justified his invite and said: “I used to do this for a living, that was my job, playing 25 events a year but I was able to be successful at something else. “It’s all mental, I am in a good head space here. I am here on vacation with my wife. It’s all a bonus. If I play well, I play well. If not, it’s still a vacation.” Soero could not maintain his momentum, and subsequent rounds of 72, 74 and 73 pushed him to 67th place at five-under par.
