17 Mar 2016

The Singapore Maritime Golf 2016 was hosted at Orchid Country Club on Monday 01st February 2016. The annual event organized by Singapore Maritime Network along with Tradewinds as event partners was a resounding success and has been declared as the most important and most supported golfing event for Asian shipping leaders. The event continues to receive a tremendous response from sponsors, supporters and participants with all 36 flights (144 golfers) being fully sold out within days of the registration being announced.
The weather gods were also generous providing their support for an uninterrupted game with a beautiful day with sunshine and breeze on the course. The goodie bags consisted of t-shirts, caps, arm sleeves, golf balls, Boston bag, golf towels, Golf Asia magazine, Redbull, Wunderbar beer bottles, Stoli vodka amongst many others and lunch preceded the shotgun start at 1330 hrs. There was free flow of drinks available on the course with water, Wunderbarbeer or Redbull energy drink. The event concluded with a cocktail dinner featuring where a live band, the awards ceremony 50 lucky draw prizes along with novelty prizes and champion trophies were given away. The tournament champion was Mr. Jan Kielmann, Global Logistics Director for GAC in Singapore. The event was sponsored by ABB, Thoresen, BC Service, Meridian Global Consulting, Garrets International, Rolls Royce Marine, Karcher South East Asia, Orbcomm, Nautisk Forlag, Moore & Stephens LLP and Wunderbar. The event also received support and contributions from Bungy Bar, Urban Fairways, Redbull Energy Drink, Bali National Golf Club, Stoli Vodka and Golf Asia.
This friendly tournament bought together senior industry folks from companies representing every aspect of the shipping business, from ship owners, ship managers, traders, charterers, lawyers, brokers, bankers, shipyards, service providers, classification society, etc. The event organizer, Capt. Mohit Batra from Singapore Maritime Networ said “The support and response from the industry has been overwhelming especially at a time when the markets are depressed. However, we are fortunate that the event is gaining international recognition as some of the sponsors and participants this year were from overseas.”
The list of registered participants included golfers who flew in from Thailand, Malaysia, China, UK, Italy and
USA just to play and attend the event. Capt. Batra also added, “The Singapore Maritime Network has been bringing people together through events. The golf tournament is the perfect networking platform and has to be meticulously
planned. If you watch a game – it’s fun, if you play it – it’s recreational and if you work at it – it’s golf.”
Since the event was planned close to the Chinese New Year, the cocktail dinner featured a Lou Hei, which was quite interesting and fun for both locals and overseas guests. “The next edition of the event will return in 2017, again close to the Chinese New Year, the date and venue for the event will soon be announced,” added Capt. Mohit Batra.
