TaylorMade P·790 Irons 2023

18 Oct 2023

A collision of art and engineering.

Prior to 2017, it was uncommon for TaylorMade to carry over the same model of a golf club from year to year. The phenomenally successful P·790 changed all that with its hollow- bodied construction packing exceptional distance and forgiveness into the sleeker and svelte profile of better player blade irons.

The P·790s are now into its fourth generation and still the leader in the players’ distance category, with each new iteration able to retain what golfers loved yet improve upon the looks, feel and performance of what had come before.

For 2023, the main headline with the P·790 irons is FLTD CG and how each iron is individually precision mass optimised by AI to perform exactly how golfers need.

Matt Bovee, Director of Irons Product Creation, said, “P·790 is a collision of art and engineering. The allure lies not only in the clean design and visual appeal, but also in the high- performance machine that lives within. It’s the total package, an ideal blend of external elegance and internal power.”

Proven P·790 technologies are still the mainstay with SpeedFoamTM Air boosting ball speed and feel. A forged 4140 high-speed face and cast hollow body construction houses the internal technology like the Thru-Slot Speed PocketTM which works in unison with all the hidden engineering to expand the sweet spot while protecting ball speeds on low-face impact.

New FLTD CGTM strategically positions the centre of gravity (CG) lowest in long irons and progressively higher through the set, enhancing launch and forgiveness in the longer clubs, while improving control and spin in the scoring irons. Expect more accuracy, control and consistency from every iron in the bag.

AI-driven Mass Optimisation has uniquely designed the inside of each P·790 iron to ensure every gram of weight is strategically placed to improve ball speed and forgiveness on mishits.

Sound Stabilisation Bars are individually customised in the three through seven irons for a premium forged feel with optimal CG placement.

In the long irons, the more centrally located bars and the tungsten weight frame closer to the sole lowers the centre of gravity for an easier and higher launch. Up to 38 grams of tungsten weights nearer the toe and a honeycombed thick-thin back wall increase perimeter weighting for improved forgiveness and a controlled CG position promotes consistency across the set.

From 8 to PW, the progressively higher CG offers more control, better spin properties and enhanced accuracy.

Enhanced sole shaping in the pitching and gap wedges add heel and trailing edge relief for more greenside versatility and better transitional flow into the MG lineup of wedges.

The P·790’s are as handsome as ever, updated with a band of tour satin scratch bisecting the pearl satin chrome finish. With refined aesthetics, P·790 irons seamlessly blend with P·770 irons in a combo set to create a unified look throughout the bag.
